LTM Designers was made two thirds of the way through the Light.Touch.Matters project, so showcases the early prototypes of the final LTM product designs. Usually designers start from a client's brief, user's requirement or an idea and then choose a material. The LTM designers started by trying to understand the unique properties of a complex set of smart materials (OLEDs, piezoelectric plastics, a conversion layer for modifying colour and control electronics) to come up with a product that made the most of their unique characteristics. This film examines the risks and rewards of engaging in this kind of materials-driven design.
